What is Field Archery?

Field archery is the discipline of shooting circular targets of different sizes set at varying distances, around a course of natural terrain.  Archers shoot distances of between 5 and 60 metres.

The distances of the targets can be marked (known by the archer) or unmarked (unknown by the archer), making the ability to judge the range of the target valuable.  The additional skills required to succeed in field archery –   including distance judging, shooting uphill and downhill.

What is 3D Archery?

3D archery is a subset of field archery focusing on shooting at life-size models of game and is popular with hunters. The types of animals vary and range from Alligators and Bobcat to Dinosaurs and Zebra.  It is most common to see unmarked distances in 3D archery, as the goal is to accurately recreate a hunting environment for competition.

3D Archery can be participated by anyone at any skill level. 3D Archery can be set in the woods, fields and sometime even indoor ranges. Guessing the distance is probably the number one skill in 3D Archery. While distance vary depending on age category - expect to shoot at 2 metres up to 50 metres. The archers must judge the distance between shooting peg and the 3D-animal target and also consider the surroundings e.g. an uphill or downhill shooting. The 3D animal targets have 4 scoring zones: an 11, a 10, an 8 and a 5.
